The Seabury Hall girls basketball team used a second-quarter surge to pull away and defeat Kamehameha Hawaii in a Heide & Cook Division II state tournament first-round game Wednesday at the Kalani gym in Honolulu.
Leela Waterford had 16 points to lead the fifth-seeded Spartans (9-2), champions of the Maui Interscholastic League. Meleana Sjostrand added 14 points, Pio Tui’vai scored 13 points and Brittlay Carillo contributed eight points, eight rebounds and four assists.
After a tight first quarter ended with the Warriors up 8-7, things turned in the second as Seabury outscored Kamehameha 17-5 to take a 34-13 lead.
KeanuMarie Huihui scored 13 points and Maela Honma added 12 points to lead the Warriors (7-4).
Seabury advances to play fourth-seeded Kailua in a quarterfinal game today.
