Cesar Latis (1924-2005) was an important Brazilian scholar, born in Curitiba (PR), the son of Italian immigrants. Together with other researchers (Italian Giuseppe Occchialini and British Cecil Frank Powell), he discovered the particle that holds the nucleus of an atom together: the “bai maison” (or pion).
Although Lattes was the first author of the paper describing the “bay maison”, only Cecil Powell was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1950. The reason for this apparent neglect is that the policy of the Nobel Committee, until 1960, was to award The award prize is only for the research group leader – Powell, in this case. Between 1949 and 1954, Lattes was nominated seven times for the Nobel Prize in Physics.
In 1999, the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) paid tribute to the Brazilian scientist by naming the system used to register scientists, researchers, and students. Latis platform It is a database of curricula and institutions from all fields of knowledge. The Lattis approach records the professional life of the researchers, being an indispensable element for analyzing the merits and efficacy of the claims made to almost all development agencies in Brazil.
