BLACKSBURG, VA. – The Binghamton wrestling team battled with No 10. Virginia Tech and West Virginia, in a round-robin formatted event. BU went 8-5 against West Virginia, and added four wins against the nationally ranked Hokies. Ryan Anderson, Nick Lombard and Lou DePrez all went undefeated on the day to lead the Bearcats.

“We wrestled tough today under the late changing circumstances,” head coach Kyle Borshoff said. “(Ryan) Anderson, (Nick) Lombard, and (Lou) DePrez dominated today and looked great. Joe Doyle got another nice nationally ranked win. The weekend as a whole showed us some areas where we have made nice improvements, and other areas that we need to continue to work on.”

Highlights

  • Anthony Sobotker split his two matches, grabbing a sudden victory over Michael Dolan to start the day. Tied at two in overtime, Sobotker was able to grab a takedown to win. The senior then dropped a 13-1 major decision to No. 5 Korbin Myers of Virginia Tech.

  • Christian Gannone went 1-1 on the afternoon, defeating Michael Dolan 5-0 before getting pinned in his final match. Gannone was tough on top throughout his matchup with Dolan, racking up ride time in every period. He is 5-3 this season.

  • Anderson dominated all three of his bouts. He earned a technical fall, decision, and major decision, surrendering just one point over the course of the three bouts. He now sits at 8-5 on the season and has won four in a row.

  • Lombard won both of his bouts, improving to 13-10 this season. Against West Virginia’s George Johnson, Lombard had a major decision in hand, but ended up pinning Johnson late in the third period. Against Virginia Tech’s Kylan Montgomery, Lombard handled business with three takedowns in an 8-2 decision.

  • Cory Day split his two matches, getting a 1-0 decision over Virginia Tech’s Simeone Holmes to start the day before getting pinned late in the team’s final matchup. Against Holmes, it remained scoreless into the third before Day rode out his opponent to get the win.

  • No. 11 DePrez won both of his matches, getting a fall and a 10-4 decision. Against West Virginia’s Jackson Moomau, he dominated from the start by getting a takedown and four swipes. The 197-pounder got the pin call shortly after. Against Andy Smith, DePrez had three takedowns in the first two periods, and ended the bout with a final takedown to end it on top.

  • Heavyweight Joe Doyle wrestled two nationally ranked opponents, winning one bout. He recorded a pin against No. 22 Michael Wolfgram, and was pinned against No. 13 Nathan Traxler.

  • Brevin Cassella added a win via forfeit against West Virginia’s Peyton Hall.
